Why do we have to screen and progress monitor on the Early Literacy Alternate Assessment Scales?
The screening and progress monitoring meet the requirements of the Early Literacy Implementation legislation for students that qualify to participate in the Iowa Alternate Assessments.
What is the difference between screening and progress monitoring?
The purpose of screening is to provide a snapshot of where the student is in comparison to the benchmarks and targets for each grade level. Screening happens three times a year, fall, winter and spring on Scales 1-4 and 6.
Progress monitoring is used to determine if interventions you have implemented are impacting student progress. Progress monitoring occurs at a minimum of once a month on selected scales.
Where do I find the ELAA Manual?
The ELAA Manual can be located on the EL AA site under the Resources section of this page as well as on Iowa’s Alternate Assessment Google Site.
How do I select the scales that I will be monitoring in the online system?
The IEP Team will use the screening data to determine which scale or scales will be monitored for progress.
How many scales must the IEP team choose for each student and how often do I have to monitor?
The IEP Team must choose a minimum of one scale to be monitored. Monitoring must happen a minimum of once a month.
Who adds and removes students from the EL AA system?
Teachers are responsible for adding and removing students from their roster.
Who needs to have a copy of the progress reports?
Copies of the progress monitoring reports for fall, winter, and spring must be sent home to parents and a copy must be kept with the student’s assessment results (perm file).

When your browser print dialogue box comes up, make sure the background graphics or print background option is selected under settings.
